NOTEBOOK: Onalaska's Breiling tops WPGA Junior event

ONALASKA, WI - Max Breiling, a junior at Onalaska High School, won the Junior Wisconsin Professional Golf Association summer tournament at the La Crosse Country Club in Onalaska on Friday.
Breiling (pictured) managed five birdies in his second nine holes for an even-par 72. Verona's Kip Sullivan and Onalaska's Carson Brock shared second place with 73.
Breiling got off to a poor start with a triple bogey 7 on the first hole. After making the turn in 5-over 41, he fired a 5-under 31 on the back nine. Breiling birdied the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14 and 18th holes to rally past Brock and Sullivan.
La Crosse's Kaleb Lycke was fourth with a 76. Hunter Neumann of Warrens was fifth with 77, while Sam Evenson of Holmen finished sixth with 78.
Other area finishers were: Jake Berry, Tomah, 82, tie for ninth place; Sam Dobbins, La Crosse, 84, 12th; Andy Odom, Onalaska, 85, 13th; Michael Antonelli, Black River Falls, 87, tie for 14th; Kale Gnewikow, Warrens, 88, 16th; Kade Gnewikow, Warrens, 90, tie for 18th; Will Chafoulias, Onalaska, 92, 20th; Matthew Peterson, Onalaska, 99, 21st; and Ty Schanhofer, Tomah, 127, 22nd.
EVENSON SHINES: Evenson paced La Crosse area players in the WPGA Junior Championship at Brown Deer Park and Dretzka Park in Milwaukee earlier in the week.
Evenson tied for 23rd place with a 11-over par 74-80-154 in the Boys 16-18 Age Division.
Kyle Bengtson, from Woodruff, won the championship with a 2-under par 73-68-141 total.
Other La Crosse area finishers were: Breiling 82-77-159, tie for 45th place; Neumann, 82-79-161, tie for 49th; Lycke, 82-80-162, tie for 52nd; Kale Gnewikow, 90-91-181, tie for 106th; and Matthew Peterson, Onalaska, 108-101-209, 124th.
Brin Neumann of Warrens, shot 90-82-172, good enough for 11th place in the Girls 13-15 Age Division.
