Weber wins 3rd La Crosse County Men’s Amateur Championship

ONALASKA, Wis. - Joe Weber’s return was a memorable one after a 3-year absence.
Weber (pictured) collected his third La Crosse County Amateur Golf Championship as presented by Pepsi-Cola of La Crosse on Sunday at The Golf Club at Cedar Creek in Onalaska.
Weber, who won the 2016 and 2017 titles, skipped the last three years, but the local dentist reaffirmed he is back.
Weber defeated Drew Schroeder and defending Jake Dunn in the 36-hole final beneath sunny skies and a strong north wind on Sunday. Weber carded 69-73-142 for a two-shot victory of Schroeder with 144 and Dunn with 147. All-time champion Paul Williamson, with seven titles, finished fourth with 148 and Tom MClintock fifth with 150.
Weber didn’t begin his round as he envisioned it, double bogeying the first hole and entering the water on the par-5 second. However, he regained his composure the rest of the way.
“After the first couple of holes, I made a couple of birdies and hung around long enough until the back nine,” said Weber, a member at La Crosse Country Club in Onalaska. “I thought if I could get to 15-16-17-18, I’d have a good chance to play well.”
Weber believed he could keep within 1-2 strokes of the lead, and indeed he did, including the shot of the day on the par-5, 17th hole. Deep in a fairway bunker 65 yards from the green, Weber hit a highlight reel shot to the green.
How far from the hole?
“Like an inch,” he chuckled.
Weber walked to the 18th tee with a three-shot lead over Schroeder, but still wasn’t convinced he sealed another title. Nonetheless he won by two shots.
“Anytime you win a tournament is wonderful. They all rate the same equally,” said the three-time winner.
Weber wouldn’t commit to the 2022 County, only saying, “I hope so. I’ll just check my schedule and go from there.”
In other men’s action, Trevor Schultz posted a 6-stroke victory in First Flight with 150. Rahn Pischke captured Second Fight honors with 160, while Eric Davidson, playing his first County Am, won Third Flight with 171. Brandon Uffelman won Fourth Flight with 172.
