Williamson wins Kwik Trip County Am for 5th time

Paul Williamson picked up his fifth title in the Kwik Trip La Crosse County Seniors Amateur Golf Championship at Forest Hills Golf Course in La Crosse on Sunday.
Williamson (pictured) now has 12 County Amateur titles, including seven Men’s County victories. Needless to say, he is the all-time leader in both tournaments.
“First off, the course was in very, very good condition today and the greens were rolling really well,” said Williamson, a member at The Golf Club in Cedar Creek in Onalaska, site of Saturday’s opening round of the 36-hole Men’s County Am next weekend. The tournament shifts to Drugan’s Castle Mound Country Club in Holmen on Sunday.
Williamson, a left-hander with a superb short game, carded a 1-over par 72 for a one-stroke victory over close friends Pete Kohnert and Mike Bistodeau, both past champions as well. The veteran Williamson posted a 2-under 33 on the front nine before finishing with 39 on the backside.
Defending champion Tom McClintock, who was seeking his third title, withdrew on Saturday due to injury.
The last few holes were exciting as expected, especially 17. Kohnert’s drive spilled into a fairway bunker. No problem. Kohnert hit an amazing 150-yard second shot onto the green within 12 feet of the hole. Williamson countered with a fairway shot that ended 8 feet from the pin. They each parred to create an even more exciting finish.
“On 18, Pete left his tee shot in the right bunker,” Williamson said. “I was short of the greenside bunker on the left, but had a tight lie. I thought I’m either going to chunk it or blade it over the green. I talked myself into a chunk and put it in the left bunker. Thankfully, I blasted out to within a foot.”
Kohnert’s bunker shot slipped off the back of the green. He chipped back on, but had to settle for a bogey. Game, set, match. Williamson added another notch to his belt.
In other action, Darren Simms and Rahn Pischke tied in First Flight with 79 with Simms winning the title on the second playoff hole. Keith Seidel captured Second Flight honors with 87, one lower than 81-year-old “Marvelous” Marv Davis, who has played in every tournament since 1991 when the County Amateur was revived.
Don Nontelle, who won the 1975 Men’s County Am before it was suspended, won the Super Seniors Flight for those 70 years and older with a low net 67 after posting a low gross 75.
