Well done, Jake Dunn - newest Men's County Am golf champ

HOLMEN, WI - The affable Jake Dunn, with the email prefix "welldunn," won the 30th annual La Crosse County Men's Amateur Golf Championship as presented by Pepsi-Cola of La Crosse Sunday at Drugan's Castle Mound Country Club.
Dunn fired a 143 in the two-day championship and nipped La Crescent, Minn., upstart Jordan Graf and last weekend's Kwik Trip Seniors County Am champion Tom McClintock by one stroke. Tyler Church finished fourth with 145.
Graf, in his second County Am after taking up the sport only four years ago, fired a 3-under 68 for a two-shot lead over Dunn in Saturday’s round at the The Golf Club at Cedar Creek in Onalaska.
The duo, playing in the last group Sunday, battled tooth-and-nail, but in the end, it was Dunn's 14-year County Am experience that made the difference.
Dunn moved into a tie with a 1-under par 34 on the front nine at Drugan's, compared to Graf's 36. However, both players struggled on the back nine.
Dunn's trouble began when he bogeyed four of his first five holes on the back.
"I hit some really good shots on the front but the floodgates opened on the back," he said, shaking his head.
Dunn finished with a 3-over 39 for 73. Graf also struggled, ending with 40 for 76.
"I have a big ego," Graf said. "I liked the 68. But I didn't like the 76 today."
Dunn held a one-stroke lead heading into the 18th hole but pulled his drive to the left side of the fairway and into tree trouble. His next shot broke several branches from the pine tree in front of him but got a fortunate bounce that left him just off the fringe on the right side of the green. Dunn chipped to within 5 feet, missed his par putt and salvaged bogey.
Graf had an equally tough time, dumping his drive into the right bunker. He then hit into the rough to the left side of the green, chunked his chip about 10 feet, put his next shot three feet from the cup, then made bogey, handing the title to Dunn.
Ben Skogen, defending champion and winner of the past two County Amateurs, finished fifth with 148 despite shooting 73 Sunday.
"My short game really hurt me," Skogen said. "I thought if I played well today, I could give myself a chance, but I didn't."
This year’s tournament took on a new format due to coronavirus concerns, with the Championship and First Flights playing Saturday at The Golf Club at Cedar Creek and Sunday at Castle Mound. Meanwhile, the Second, Third and Fourth Flights played Saturday at Castle Mound before finishing up Sunday at The Golf Club at Cedar Creek.
"The first County Am title is the most difficult," Dunn said, with a big sigh of relief. "The fact is I hadn't won it. I wanted to win it in the worst way. Now I can say I did."
In other men's action, Mitch Gault won First Flight with 153, Jordan Rudolph captured Second Flight with 162, James Freng won Third Flight with 166 and Eric Flack took Fourth Flight with 170.
