Balduzzi cruises to 2nd Pepsi Women's County Am title

ONALASKA, WI - Annie Balduzzi (pictured) made it look easy on Saturday, winning the 22nd annual La Crosse County Women's Amateur Golf Championship as presented by Pepsi-Cola of La Crosse at The Golf Club at Cedar Creek in Onalaska.
Balduzzi, 19, shot a 5-over par 76 for a 7-stroke victory over close friend and University of Sioux Falls teammate Sydney Hubbard. Kaitlin MacCharles, 20, an Upper Iowa University golfer, finished third with 85. All three are from Onalaska.
Balduzzi won last year's title with a 6-over par 77, while Hubbard, 21, earned the 2017 and 2018 titles, but didn't enter last year because of summer employment in Sioux Falls.
Onalaska's Amber Nguyen, 17, a senior at Onalaska High School, won the low junior award with 91. Nguyen was the youngest woman to enter the tournament in many years, and hopefully, will spark other high school players to enter in 2021.
Balduzzi posted identical 38 nine-hole rounds, including what may have been the shot of the day to the 18th green. Left with a 50-yard shot, Balduzzi knocked her chip to within 3 inches of the cup for a tap-in birdie.
"I actually started out having to scramble a lot but I was able to recover," she said, going over her scorecard moments after her round. "On 15, I tripled when I hit it into the water, but I came back on 18."
Balduzzi said this year's title is also a little sweeter because "a lot more girls came out to play."
She also said she appreciated all the encouragement from her playing partners.
"This year was a lot more fun because Sydney and Amber were pushing me to keep doing my best," Balduzzi said with a wide grin.
"She did great," said Hubbard. "I only wish her the best. And it was so good to have Amber play this year, too."
Nguyen, playing in her first "adult" tournament, said she was nervous but eventually settled down.
"I was really shaky the first nine because I was playing with the great university students, but then I kind of settled down the second nine," the shy Nguyen said.
Lynda Johnson captured the Low Net Flight championship with 66, three strokes lower that Cathi Baus.
