Weber, Skogen, Dirks make cut in Wisconsin State Amateur

MINOCQUA, WI - Three top contenders for the 2018 La Crosse County Amateur Golf Championships next week are playing well in the 117th Wisconsin State Golf Association State Amateur Championship.
Two-time County Am Joe Weber of Onalaska is in a three-way tie for third place after the 36-hole cut at the Minocqua Country Club on Tuesday. Weber posted a pair of 70s for a 140 total heading into Wednesday's round.
Ben Skogen, also from Onalaska and a former member of the University of Wisconsin men's golf team, is in a three-way tie for ninth place with 70-72-142. Skogen finished fourth in the 2017 County Am.
Josh Dirks of La Crosse, who finished sixth in last year's County Am, is in a five-way tie for 59th place with 76-76-152.
Other La Crosse area players didn't fare quite as well. Onalaska's Bennett Hutson missed the 36-hole cut by one stroke with 81-73-154. Chaseburg's Quinn Schultz shot 79-79-158, Shawn Borre of La Crosse managed 77-81-159, while Onalaska's Joel Preeshl and Fountain City's Jordan Wachowiak each had 164 and Trey Gwenikow of Warrens 167.
Hunter Eichhorn of Carney, MI, sits atop the leaderboard with 69-68-137. Thomas Longbella of Chippewa Falls is in second place with 66-73-139.
The 72-hole event concludes on Thursday.

McClintock wins TRGA Trempealeau Mountain Open

TREMPEALEAU, WI - Tom McClintock turned into a philosopher on Sunday.
"It's the worst I ever played and won a tournament, if that's sounds right? But they always say your best win is your last win because you never know when that last one is going to be," said McClintock after winning the annual Three Rivers Golf Association VPP Group/Big Sky Cattle Trempealeau Mountain Open.
McClintock toured the par-71 Trempealeau Mountain Golf Club layout in 5-over 76, one stroke better than Matthew Peterson in the Men's Championship Flight. Both players shot 35 on the front nine. McClintock finished with 41 on the back nine. Peterson fell to 42.
"Well, I know I'm rusty. I was cruising along and then I lost my focus," McClintock said. "It's between my ears. I just have to get my head together. Hopefully, I will right the ship."
While it was McClintock's first TRGA victory of the season, Jeff Pigorsch collected his second triumph in First Flight with 75. Mark Werner captured Second Flight with 83, the same score Joe Hunter managed for the Third Flight title. Josh Luethe captured the Gold Flight with a low net 88.
Terry Ziegelbauer won her fourth Women's Flighted crown with a low net 81.

Weber, Hosking share Lawn Care Specialists Open lead

HOLMEN, WI - Joe Weber is peaking at the right time.
Weber, the La Crosse County Amateur champion the past two years, is tied with PGA professional Max Hosking after Day 1 of the annual Lawn Care Specialists Open.
Weber and Hosking each carded 2-under 68, while Holmen pro Keegan Drugan is two strokes back with 70. Tyler Church, Jake Dunn and Connor Frawley are in a three-way tie for fourth place with 71.
Frawley, Drugan, Weber and Hosking form today's final group of Championship Flight players at 11:30 a.m.
Weber is seeking the $750 first-place amateur gift card, while Hosking hopes to win his second straight pro title and the $2,500 winner's check.
Weber won the 2016 and 2017 County Am titles and is a solid favorite for this year's championship scheduled Aug. 4-5.
In other first-round action, Mitch Gault's 73 is one shot ahead of Tim Darwin and Bob Geary in the First Flight. James Freng and Jeremiah Shimshak share the Second Flight lead with 82, while Damian Bork and Bob Roers top the Third Flight with 83.
This year's field opened with 87 players including 32 Championship Flight.

Dirks sizzles in Lawn Care Specialists Open victory

HOLMEN, WI - The only thing that was hotter than the weather on Saturday was Josh Dirks.
La Crosse's Dirks carved his way to a 6-under par 64 after a 2-over 72 on Friday for a two-day, 136 total and his second straight victory in the amateur portion of the Lawn Care Specialists Open at Drugan's Castle Mound Country Club in Holmen.
PGA professional Max Hosking of Madison claimed the Pro Division with 68-69-137 giving Dirks the overall title in Championship Flight. Dirks finished sixth in the 2017 La Crosse County Amateur Golf Championships and like first-round co-leader and two-time County Am champ Joe Weber, is considered one of the top contenders for this year's title on Aug. 4-5. After shooting 68 on Friday, Weber finished 10 strokes higher on Saturday for 146 and an 11th place tie.
Andrew Steinhofer and Holmen's Keegan Drugan, both pros, tied for third place with 139 while Jake Dunn and Connor Frawley shared fifth at 143.
Meanwhile, Bob Geary captured First Flight honors with 149, one stroke lower than Bruce Lindseth.
Tim Peterson's 164 took the Second Flight crown, while Bob Roers claimed the Third Flight title with 169.
